Broken
– A DVX100a Digital Short Film

When I hear
the word broken, in this case the DVX100 short film entitled
Broken, I automatically think… must fix, not working properly,
out of order. I am however terribly sorry to disappoint you
because when it comes to the use of the DVX100 and accessories,
this short flick is anything but. Alex Ferrari and his crew put
together a very sellable product by incorporating the Mini DV
format, extreme digital effects and a bucket load of marketing
strategies.
I have to be
honest with you, these guys are wizards of the DIY game like Gandalf
the Grey is to the Shire. BUT… considering that this is a short film
and your only option of watching it is to buy the DVD for $20 stiff
ones (not including $4.99 for S&H) then I think it’s safe to say
that this movie deserves a product review as well as a movie review.
So sit back and read up. I bought my copy. Here’s my story.
Marketing the DVD Special Features
As usual, I’m
forever clicking through the never ending depths of the cyber space
continuum, searching for cool DIY movie production tips and tricks
when I accidentally come across this DIY short digital film shot on
the DVX100a entitled “Broken - a tale by Alex Ferrari”. Their
product site was real cool and their teaser trailer was even cooler.
So I did some extensive research regarding the flick (a couple
minutes worth) and found how much DIY tips and tricks that they
offered in their special features section in the DVD. I’m talking
this DVD was jammed packed with “how to” segments covering all
aspects of how to make a movie. Pre-production, production and
post-production, you name it, they had it. They even listed segments
covering marketing and promotion strategies, how to find your best
composition, how to make Mini DV look like film, endless amounts of
insider information I just couldn’t refuse. Needless to say, I
bought it! I punched in my Paypal account number and couldn’t wait
to have a field day with the newest of my DVX movies, packaged with
a boat load of do-it-yourself insider movie secrets. I was stoked!
DVD Packaging
Several days
later my girlfriend sends me a text message while I was at work and
it read “I have a package delivery with your name on it.” Oh I just
knew it!! The postman delivered my DVD while I was away from home.
That bastard! Finally, after the longest part time shift of my
life, I dart through the doorway of my apartment and I quickly slice
through the DVD’s bubble padded paper restraints. To my surprise,
the DVX100 film’s case was even more beautiful in person than
displayed on the website. The graphic work looked just like a studio
funded flick. My girlfriend stormed out of our room to see what all
of the ruckus was about. “Carlos? What the hell is going on?” I
didn’t want her to notice I was more excited to see my DVX movie
than I was to see her. So like a true gentleman, I greeted my woman
friend with a kiss and casually offered her to cuddle with me while
we watch this cool little movie I ordered over the internet. She
happily accepted my invitation. Hell yeah! It’s Broken time!(continued
