You Can't Be a Filmmaker If You've Never Made a Film
by Saul Greenberg
Years ago in the
time of the Robert Rodriguez’s and the Kevin Smiths, long before the
DVX100, filmmaking was beyond the reach of the average Joe. Access
to professional production equipment as well as financial backing
for even starting an indie film production was unheard of. Today of
course is a different story. We now have access to technology that,
well, pretty much makes anything possible. So I think now would be a
proper time to ask yourself…what are you waiting for?
What better time
is there than now to make your movie? What more do you want in terms
of ease and efficiency in today’s desktop publishing technology?
What is it exactly that you’re waiting for?
Someone to hand
you your big break? Uncertain of how to actually make a movie? Still
saving up your money to get into film school? What can it be?
Or is it just
self-doubt?
Your Big
Break
Listen, if you’re waiting for that one big break while working as a
production assistant on SOMEBODY ELSE’S film, I wish you the best.
Although working as a production assistant can provide some
knowledge in the production process of a movie, you’re still
spending your own time and efforts on someone else’s movie while you
should be spending it producing your own film. Time is precious.
Uncertain on how to make a movie?
Who isn’t?
Especially on a do it yourself level! On a no budget movie, all the
rules of production change anyway. You just do what you have to do
to make the shots work. On an independent production, there really
is no right or wrong way to make a film. There are only efficient
methods vs. non-efficient methods. The only thing that matters is
that you achieve your desired result. For example, the way Hollywood
produces movies is just like that of an assembly line. There are
whole departments that handle every single phase of production. On a
little indie flick, you’re the one that does all the work. It won’t
be easy, but it can be done.
